Kin House is undoubtedly the new ‘WOW’ wedding venue in the UK. When our friends Nikki & Brandon announced that this was their wedding venue I did get quite excited! I had a sneaky suspicion that we would be asked to make their wedding cake. Our first wedding cake at Kin House. YESS!
Firstly, the cake design.. Nikki loved the vertical ruffles (ok, Brandon did too but let’s be honest it was mainly about Nikki :) She also loved the white sugar flower cascade coming down the front. One of my first questions to a couple when design their wedding cake is ‘where will your cake be positioned’. If the cake is going to the side of the room and only has a front view, then a frontal cascade is perfect. But, if the cake is going to be seen 360, then they design needs to be 360. No front and no back. Nikki and Brandon confirmed that the cake would be to the side of the room in the main bar area at Kin House.
N & B wanted their wedding cake at Kin House to be mainly white, contrasting with champagne and some minimal gold detail. Nikki showed me their stationery and, how ‘N & B’ was shown on the invitation. This is what we wanted to replicate and to do this detail in gold would be perfect. Peonies and roses were the chosen fresh florals but the favourite of these was peonies. Nikki absolutely adores peonies and asked if we could create as many peonies as possible (within their budget).
It was about 4 weeks before the wedding when Nikki messaged me with a slight change of plan (oh god…). The cake was to be placed in the middle of the room. Nikki knew I would be thrilled with this (because I am a complete showoff) but it did actually cause us a bit of stress. The design wasn’t 360 and now needed to be.
As a luxury wedding supplier, we don’t just see our job as designing and making luxury wedding cakes. It’s also about how we handle the clients expectations and, this close to the wedding, we do not want to give them any stress at all. Absolutely none. So behind the scenes we were talking about changing the design, whilst still incorporating N & B most favoured elements. Also, when we have to change the design like this at the last minute, we want the client to be even more ‘wowed’ than they would have originally. I then threw Nikki a bit by suggesting the addition of some green. I mocked up a few of the flowers together and added some green and from then on we just couldn’t ‘un see’ the green! The best thing you want to hear from a bride (or groom :) is ‘I trust you completely’. ‘Do whatever you think works’. Ok. We will!
Lastly, Nikki wanted some overlay/embroidery detail on her cake. This would have been in white, on the champagne tiers. Unfortunately, once we had altered the main design, this just didn’t work. We tried to add a little, but then we took it off. Sometimes, less is more.
So pleased to say that Nikki & Brandon absolutely loved their wedding cake. PHEW. A MASSIVE PHEW!!!
If you are hosting your wedding at Kin House, in my opinion, you will need a statement cake. Of course, I am going to say that! No, seriously, the venue is so impressive, there is so much space and I do genuinely thing a smaller cake will just be lost in this stunning setting.
